GROOMER REPORTS

Central Trail

Groomer got thru the North Side Loop(route 212) Last night and early this morning and was able to do a double pass where permitted.  Central then did a driver change and left towards Summerside to attempt to start  widening the rail bed in spots.  A slight misjudgement and no snow after a drift and we were stuck outside Hunter River for a few Hours.  A huge thanks To Island Coastal and there team.  When able they come right away.  Presently the groomer is in Summerside area and plan to head back toward Charlottetown and open the Warburton Road (route208) tonight.  Weather outlook for Queens county is not great with 20-30mm of rain tomorrow.  This will hurt in low snow areas and may settle some of the drifted areas.  Hope to be out thru the week to cut back some of these areas if weather is good.  Lots of traffic over everywhere yesterday.  Enjoy when it is good folks.  Sled safe and STAY TO THE RIGHT.  Operators are saying about sledders in the middle of the trails and near misses and such.  Sleds are travelling alot faster than the 15km an hour the groomers are going.

February 9th Update

Eastern Groomer and Island # 4 are still working together to get everything opened. We are now at 66 consecutive hours of breaking through the trail system. We came from Souris on Trail # 100 heading west to St. Peter's and Mount Stewart. This section of trail had enormous amounts of snow especially through the blueberry fields near Morell. Both machines were close to 6 hours busting through the 10 foot high banks and it was extremely slow work, Finally after 10 pm they were able to make it to Mount Stewart before heading back down the Route # 104 towards Lake Verde. Both machines headed in the #105 towards Mount Herbert hoping that this new trail might offer a section with a little less snow, but as one of the operators told me this morning this is the worst section of trail we have seen in 4 days of busting banks. When the trail is this hard to get through we go through a tremendous amount of fuel and before they could finish we had to retreat back to Grandview for fuel and fix a couple of hydraulic leaks. We will return back to the 105 and finish opening this section before hooking on to drags and starting all over again. I can not believe the amount of time it is taking to get these trails open as it is the worst I have seen in 25 years of managing the groomers. The operators have done a splendid job of keeping the machines running through these massive snow banks and drifts but unfortunately it is taking longer than we had hoped (not from lack of effort). Hopefully we can finish breaking through the final tough sections today and start with the drags. For those who will be riding this weekend please understand that the trails are not perfect yet but passable and you need to be very careful

Eastern # 1 and Island # 4 February 19 Update

It was another extremely busy day again on the Eastern Trail system. Between trucks and trailers from all over PEI and the many sledders who are able to access the trail system by snowmobile there was heavy traffic on all the trails. Speaking with some of our restaurant partners like Peake's Tee, Ocean Acres Campground and Deck Restaurant, they indicated it was one of the busiest weekends ever and gas stations in Murray River, Mount Stewart, Dundas and Scotchfort also indicated they were busy as well. Two groomers left last night and we did a double pass on the #104 between Grandview and Mt. Stewart and made a double pass into Morrison's Truck Parts in Mt. Albion on the # 105 (Lots of traffic from this area as it was used as a trailer unloading area). We also did a double pass on the # 217 from East Uigg to New Perth then another double pass on the #103 from the Bus Depot to Mt. Stewart. Starting tonight the groomers will begin grooming the entire trail system again with double passes. With traffic expected to be heavy again today I just want to let snowmobilers know that the following restaurants will be open for our members. The Deck Restaurant at Ocean Acres Campground in Murray Harbour, Holy Cow in Morell, and Red Claw Bistro in Souris is also open for business today on Islander Day 2024. If you are out and about please keep right and ride safe.

KASA Trail

Today’s trail report involves the town of Kensington, after a really busy weekend on the KASA trails I would just like to say a few things about the trail going through Kensington. I would like to ask that all sledders please follow the marked path for fuel, this means you exit of the confederation trail at the train station and follow the marked path behind Murphy’s pharmacy, then behind Bank of Nova Scotia to Bells Irving service station. You are allowed to cross the road to get to Petro Canada if need be. I would ask that you do not drive on the sidewalks or up and down the streets! Kensington Police services have been very understanding but there patients are getting thin. There is no need to drive a snowmobile on the road or the sidewalk at all. There is a great parking lot next to Bells Irving or adequate parking at the train station. If you need Tim’s or friends and family restaurant please park and walk. I hope to have everyone on board with this as we do not want to end up like Summerside! No way in or out! Last thing I need to say is please SLOW down, there is no need of going fast through town! All your doing is ruining it for everyone else. Enjoy the trails, it’s for everyone, ride safe, and keep right. Thanks RussJ
